TikTok Crosses 1-Billion Downloads Milestone on App Store, Google Play: Sensor Tower
TikTok has achieved a new milestone. The constant bombardment of videos of people doing silly antics, from lip-syncing or dancing to popular songs to Bollywood dialogues in your Facebook feed has taken TikTok to astounding new success.
The social video app from Beijing's ByteDance has hit another major milestone with more than one billion worldwide downloads on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, Sensor Tower revealed in its latest Store Intelligence estimates report.
The one billion downloads include lite versions and regional variations of the app but does not include Android installs in China. New users reached 71.3 million worldwide, excluding China count.
TikTok, the fourth most downloaded non-game app in last year was the number three app globally in terms of new installs across both stores during January and was number one non-game app in the US last month.
Interestingly, 25 percent of TikTok's downloads to date have come from India, and the userbase is estimated to be about 250 million. Last month, 43 percent of new users were from India, compared to 9.5 percent in January last year.
The share of new users from the US has also grown. Nine per cent of TikTok's January installs were recorded from the US compared to 5.6 percent last year.
In comparison, the Facebook app was installed an estimated 711 million times last year while Instagram recorded just 444 million new downloads.

Energizer P18K Pop with 18,000mAh Battery Showcased at MWC 2019

We have all faced the dreaded “Battery low” notification on our smartphones and wished for a bigger battery at some point or the other. Low battery life was an issue plaguing most smartphones at a point. Manufacturers have tried fixing the issue by offering bigger batteries but it looks like Avenir Telecom - brand licensee for Energizer's - might have gone a little too far. At MWC, Avenir Telecom unveiled an Energizer-branded smartphone with a whopping 18,000mAh battery. Yes, you read that right - we didn't add an extra zero there.

Called the Energizer P18K Pop, the smartphone packs in the huge battery and the bulk is visible. At a reported thickness of close to 18mm it is significantly thicker than pretty much every other smartphone in the market. The manufacturer claims that the battery on this smartphone can last for a week and capable of delivering 2 full days of continuous video playback. This might be a conservative figure considering the Realme C1 with its 4230mAh battery managed close to 20 hours in our video loop test.

The Energizer P18K Pop has a 6.2-inch display with thin bezels all around. There is a pop-up mechanism at the top of this device which houses a dual selfie camera. The phone is reported to be powered by a MediaTek Helio P70 processor along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of inbuilt storage. The P18K Pop has a USB Type-C port at the bottom and two speaker grilles on either side.
The Energizer P18K Pop comes bundled with a fast charger which isn't surprising considering the mammoth battery size. Even with fast charging we can safely say that it will easily take a couple of hours to top the battery off completely.

Google fixes PNG security bug that let hackers attack Android phones

The critical security vulnerability, as Google notes, exists in Android's Framework and "it could allow a remote attacker using a specially crafted PNG file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process."

Google has already released the security update to fix the vulnerability. It had also notified all its partners and released the code patches to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository.
However, despite the proactive measures to fix the flaw, millions of Android devices are still vulnerable to the hack. The reason for this simple. The security patch that Google has released will fix issues in a handful of devices including Google's own Pixel smartphones, the Pixel C tablet, and the Essential smartphone. That still leaves millions of Android smartphones vulnerable to the attack as it will take smartphone makers to adapt the patch as per their own user interface and roll out the update on to their devices.
However, the scenario is not all grim. The Mountain View, California based company said that so far it has heard no reports where the vulnerability had been used to target Android users. "We have had no reports of active customer exploitation or abuse of these newly reported issues," Google said in its Android Security Bulletin for the month of February 2019. Additionally, the company, according to a report by ZDNet, has declined to share the technical details of the hack in order to mitigate the risk of the attack.
n case you don't own a Pixel smartphone, the best way to stay clear of the hack is by not downloading PNG images from unknown or unreliable sources.

Smartphone sales to grow in India in 2019, with ‘Luxe’ segment expected to grow: Report

Smartphone sales growth will increase by 19 per cent in 2019 as per techARC’s India Smartphone Segment Sales Forecast 2019 because users will look for an upgrade to their existing 4G phone.

A report by research firm techARC reveals that smartphones will witness 13 per cent growth in sales this year in India. This increase has been credited to the large volume of 4G to 4G smartphone upgrade tipped to take place during 2019. The firm is predicting 149 million smartphones will be sold in 2019 in India with Luxe or the the ultra premium segment contributions increasing 26 per cent compared to last year.

As per techARC, most of the 4G smartphone users in India were added between 2015 to 2016, which would be around the time Reliance Jio also entered the market. Jio formally launched in September 2016, though it had started offering its services in testing mode to select users.
The firm is predicting that these it is these users who are due to replace their existing 4G smartphones in 2019, which in turn will help drive sales during the course of the year. More importantly many of these customers will be looking to own a better smartphone than their previous one.
Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, techARC, sharing the insights from the report said, “There is a benchmark for majority of the 4G smartphone users and they will be looking for a replacement which gives them better experience comparing what they have in hand.”
“Though very subjective and personal to each user, experience will be measured how efficiently and effectively the 4G Smartphone adapts to the multiple roles that a user would want the device to play.  For instance, a video player, camera and so on,” he added.
Predictions by the research firm show that basic phones ( priced under Rs 5,000) which currently hold 8 per cent market, will decrease to 5 per cent in 2019, while luxe smartphones (priced above Rs 50,000) will see growth as their market share reaches to 9 per cent from the current 8 per cent.Entry level smartphones (between a price of Rs 5,0001 to Rs 10,000) will also see their share declining from 20 per cent in 2018 to 15 per cent in 2019.
The mid-range phones, which are priced between 10,0001 to Rs 25,000 and premium smartphones (priced between Rs 25,0001 to Rs 50,000), will be the ones seeing growth. The first segment will account for 51 per cent market share from the current 46 per cent, while premium phones will hold 20 per cent of the sales from the existing 18 per cent.
According to techArc, in 2019 over 80 per cent of the sales will be for $140 and above smartphones, while the low-end smartphones will decline in sales. This is primarily due to negligible direct feature phone to smartphone switch. The user switch journey will continue to be for feature phone to smart-feature phone, which will be primarily due to JioPhone, claims the report.
